About the Artist & the Studio
Ivy Glasgow is educated as an architect, but her first passion is ceramic art. She has returned to ceramics after 15 years of architecture. She draws her inspiration for the forms and images of her work from the dramatic high desert landscape and the farming and ranching traditions in our region.
The studio is located in the small town of Monument, in Eastern Oregon. We are in the center of a remote, seemingly undiscovered sportsman's paradise. The town of Monument is nestled in a small green river valley of pastures and farms, between dramatic and colorful mountain ridges. Surrounded by peace and quiet, the natural beauty here is inspirational and refreshing.
The tiles I create are, in their own way, bounded by certain constraints. I focus on making tiles that are functional, beautiful, and durable. My pottery work explores the possibilites outside of those limits. The clay can take any shape that you give it; The only limit is your imagination. I occasionally make forays into making pottery, exploring a free-sprited expression of a design idea. I enjoy making small functional wares that are unconventional in color or form, while still being perfectly functional. This work explores and pushes the boundaries of the conventions of form, proportion, and surface texture. These explorations often lead to forms which have their own narrative, along with a sense of humor.
