About Glazes

The studio glazes are hand-formulated by the artist and are exclusive to the studio. All the glazes are free of lead and barium. The glaze is hand-applied to the tiles by dipping and brushing, then high-fired to stoneware temperature, 1240 degrees Celsius.

Glazes noted as highly variable or variegated have a wide range of color, texture, or appearance. Please order a sample group or request photos to see the full range of these colors.

Because of impurities in raw materials and variations in production, glazes can vary significantly from one lot to the next. Each order is made with a fresh glaze lot, and there might not be any left over once that order is sent out. For this reason, it's a very good idea to order 10% to 20% over the required number of tiles, to allow for cutting, attic stock, and installation accidents. If different glaze lots must be used on the same job, the tiles should be randomly mixed before installation for a natural appearance of variation. Glazes may be changed or discontinued at any time without notice. Discontinued glazes will be available by special order.

Studio glazes are formulated to be durable and non-fading. Well cared-for tiles can easily withstand daily use for generations. That being said, tile glazes are glass and can be scratched, etched, or chipped, just like glass. Use only non-abrasive and non-etching cleaners and protect the glaze from scratching during installation.

Every effort has been made to accurately depict colors on the website. What you see may vary from the real thing because of the limitations of the web, different compter monitors, and different monitor settings.

Custom glazes and color matching are available, please inquire.
