About Ivy Glasgow

After 15 years as an architect, I have returned to my first love: Ceramics. Clay has always been my favorite art media, and returning to it is like coming home after a long abscence. My time away was not entirely fulfilling, but at the same time I gained many experiences and ideas that make my new work better than ever. My experience in architecture both enriched and informed my design vocabulary, and made me acutely aware of the challenges faced by construction professionals. After returning to ceramic arts, I was inspired to work in ceramic tiles by my own experience in remodeling our home. After searching for tiles that appealed to my desire for intense colors and fresh designs, and finding none, I realized that it was up to me to realize my visions of abstract designs, symbolic images, and wonderful, varigated, juicy colors. My abstract designs are inspired by the juxtaposition of geometric forms agains the more organic repetitive forms of the natural world; to form larger patterns and textures, crisp and defined or soft and flowing. The play of light and shadow over the surface adds another dimension to the pattern. Geometric form both abstracted and symbolic, ancient and modern. Natural textures from such varied sources as textiles, grasses, waves, and clouds. The ever-present human influence in nature. In developing my forms I sculpt using found objects both natural and manufactured. Some of the objects I have used include soda cans, plastic pipe, grasses, textiles, and basketry. representational work is a realistic or idealized view of the scenes around us in daily life. An iconic view of culture and mythology, leavened with a spirit of play. the dramatic high desert landscape and the farming and ranching traditions in our region. The dimension of color. Color adds so much to our daily lives. It is a signifier and a mood enhancer. I believe that bright, bold colors have been lacking from our homes for too long. It's time to turn it up a notch and enjoy all that color has to offer us

The studio is located in the small town of Monument, in Eastern Oregon. We are in the center of a remote, seemingly undiscovered sportsman's paradise. The town of Monument is nestled in a small green river valley of pastures and farms, between dramatic and colorful mountain ridges. Surrounded by peace and quiet, the natural beauty here is inspirational and refreshing.

The tiles I create are, in their own way, bounded by certain constraints. I focus on making tiles that are functional, beautiful, and durable. My pottery work explores the possibilites outside of those limits. The clay can take any shape that you give it; The only limit is your imagination. I occasionally make forays into making pottery, exploring a free-sprited expression of a design idea. I enjoy making small functional wares that are unconventional in color or form, while still being perfectly functional. This work explores and pushes the boundaries of the conventions of form, proportion, and surface texture. These explorations often lead to forms which have their own narrative, along with a sense of humor.
